Charcoal lighter fluid — outdoor safety profile
Elevated riskPetroleum distillate lighter fluid for igniting charcoal grills.
What is this product?
Petroleum distillate lighter fluid for igniting charcoal grills. Contains aliphatic and isoparaffinic hydrocarbons (C7-C12). Aspiration hazard if ingested. When applied to charcoal, lighter fluid residue can generate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that deposit on grilled food. PAHs are known carcinogens. CPSC-regulated for child-resistant packaging. Flammable (flash point ~40C). One of the most common causes of childhood petroleum distillate aspiration pneumonia — clear liquid easily mistaken for water.

Fuel
- Mineral spirits / petroleum naphtha — Aspiration hazard. Low-viscosity hydrocarbons enter lungs rapidly if swallowed. Clear liquid easily mistaken for water by children. Incomplete combustion on charcoal generates PAHs on grilled food.
How to use it more safely
- Apply to cold charcoal only — never add to burning/smoldering coals
- Allow lighter fluid to burn off completely before cooking (minimum 15-20 minutes)
- Store in child-resistant container out of reach of children
Red flags — when to walk away
- Adding lighter fluid to hot/burning coals — Flash fire/explosion risk
Green flags — what to look for
- No lighter fluid used (chimney starter or electric starter) — Zero aspiration risk, zero PAH contamination from lighter fluid
Safer alternatives
- Charcoal chimney starter — Eliminates lighter fluid entirely; no aspiration risk, no PAHs from fluid; uses newspaper or fire starters
- Electric charcoal starter — No liquid fuel; no fire/aspiration risk; plugs in and heats coals directly
