Formamide (HCONH2) is classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant under EU CLP Regulation (reprotoxic, may damage the unborn child) and has been restricted in children's products in Belgium (2010), France (2012), and across the EU under REACH Annex XVII Entry 77 (2020). The EU restriction limits formamide in EVA foam mat products to 200 mg/kg (measured after 28 days at 20C) for products placed on the market after 2021. Testing by European consumer agencies found formamide levels of 200-20,000 mg/kg in EVA puzzle mats prior to the restriction, with emissions continuing for months after purchase. Formamide off-gasses continuously from EVA foam at room temperature, creating a vapor-phase exposure for anyone exercising on the mat, with dermal absorption enhanced by sweating during exercise (formamide is water-miscible and readily absorbed through intact skin). Children's exposure is particularly concerning: prolonged floor-level contact time, hand-to-mouth transfer, and higher dose per body weight. The US has no formamide restriction in foam mats — formamide-containing EVA products banned from EU sale are available in US retail.
